Stone Store & Kemp House

At the head of the scenic Kerikeri River Basin are two of New Zealand’s oldest buildings, the Stone Store (New Zealand’s oldest stone building) and Kemp House (New Zealand’s oldest European building).

Kemp House was a mission house in the early 1800’s and the Stone Store was the mission’s storehouse. The Maori Chief of this area granted the land at the Kerikeri Basin to missionaries to establish a Church Mission Settlement, well before the Treaty of Waitangi was signed.

The Stone Store, Kemp House and nearby historic St James Church and cemetery are ‘must-sees’ when you visit Kerikeri.

Kerikeri is often described as the Cradle of the Nation, being the location of the first permanent mission station in the country.
