Waitangi Treaty Grounds

A 20 minute drive from Kerikeri towards Paihia brings you to one of New Zealand’s most culturally and historically significant sites – Waitangi Treaty Grounds.

It was here that our founding governing document, the Treaty of Waitangi, was signed in 1840 between Maori Chiefs and British settlers.

Step inside the sacred carved Maori meeting house, visit the historic Treaty House and learn all about the signing of the treaty, be awe-struck by the power and passion of a Maori cultural performance, see the ancient Maori canoe and take in amazing Bay of Islands views from the beautiful park-like grounds on high. Waitangi is a must-visit. Cultural shows and tours are available at Waitangi.

See the Waitangi Treaty Grounds website for more information.
